League Of Women Voters

The League of Women Voters of Litchfield Country hosted Professor Lindsey Cormack, author of “How to Raise a Citizen (and why it’s up to you to do it)” for their Spring Tea, an Education Fund fundraiser.

Professor Cormack stressed the importance of not trying to raise a “good” Democrat or Republican, caregivers and society should aim to raise informed citizens who understand how our democracy works and the importance of being civically engaged. She reminded the audience that we are very luck to live in a country where we have agency over the outcome of our future. In order to exercise that agency, we need to understand how the system works.

The Education Fund is used to host candidate forums, the Annual Legislative Breakfast, voter registration drives, and an annual scholarship.

The League’s scholarship application follows with the theme of the tea and their mission: to encourage informed participation in our democracy. Any public high school senior in Litchfield County was invited to respond to  make an appeal to your peers on the importance of voting. The response could be a written essay, or a short 2-4 minute video. Over 20 applications were received.

The winner of this year’s $1,000 scholarship will be announced at our Annual Meeting, which will be held on Wednesday, June 3 at 6:30pm at the Litchfield Community Center.  League members and anyone curious about joining the League is encouraged to attend the Annual Meeting.
